Getting started

Is there a Duolingo for Tibetan?

Gangkar is a free app that fills the same role for Tibetan that Duolingo does for other languages. It teaches the alphabet, reading, vocabulary with native audio, and grammar, as a guided course.

What does Gangkar teach?

All 30 letters of the Tibetan alphabet with stroke-order tracing, the vowels and consonant stacks, the reading rules of spoken Lhasa Tibetan, everyday vocabulary with real native-speaker audio, and classical grammar. Sentence building is on the way. See everything you'll learn.

Is Gangkar free?

Yes, Gangkar is completely free. Every lesson is free to use, with no account required to start.

Is the audio a real voice or synthesized?

Real recordings. Letters, words, and phrases are spoken by human voices, not text-to-speech. You can even contribute a missing word and record its pronunciation yourself.

What dialect of Tibetan does Gangkar teach?

Spoken Lhasa Tibetan, with audio recorded by native speakers. The classical grammar and script sections also cover the written and liturgical forms.

I'm a complete beginner. Is that okay?

That's exactly who it's built for. You start with a gentle, sound-led walk through the letters, and everything else unlocks in order as you're ready.

Using the app

How do I progress through lessons?

Complete each chapter's quiz to unlock the next one. Chapters build on each other in order.

Can I reset my progress?

Progress is stored on your device, and syncs to your account when you sign in. You can reset it from the Social tab, or by clearing the app's data.

Report a problem

How do I report a word error?

In the Social tab, open Connect and tap Feedback, choose "Word error," and describe what needs fixing. You can also email us directly.
